Music

A cappella

  • Tuesday, January 21 to Thursday, January 23, 8 to 11 pm, Hamilton 303
  • Columbia’s a cappella groups are accepting auditions for new singers! There is no advance registration, so if you’re interested, go to Hamilton at any point on the three days of auditions and bring a verse and a chorus of your favorite songs. The groups that are accepting new members are The Kingsmen, The Metrotones, The Clefhangers, Notes & Keys, Jubilation, Sur, Columbia Gospel Choir, SHARP, and Bacchantae. Columbia Pops

  • Friday, January 24 to Sunday, January 26
  • Columbia Pops is a student orchestra ensemble that presents pop music concerts each semester. This year, they are accepting auditions from all instruments except pianos, harps, flutes, Bb clarinets, tenor saxophones, and trumpets. The audition is a 15-minute slot where you should bring a short solo piece and will be asked to sight-read an excerpt from the group’s previous repertoire. Columbia University Bach Society

  • Video audition due Friday, January 31
  • The Bach Society is composed both of Columbia students and greater New York City musicians and presents classical and contemporary instrumental, choral, and operatic works. Submit a two-to-three minute video audition here. Look at their website for more details.

Theatre Pit Auditions for CUPAL

  • Wednesday, February 5, and Thursday, February 6, 8:15 to 11:30 pm, Lerner Hall
  • Sign up using this form and reserve a slot with this form to be considered for the pit orchestras of various CUPAL productions: CMTS’ Ride the Cyclone, CMTS’ Showcase, First Stages’ Alive: The Mary Shelley Musical, First Stages’ “R” Town, NOMADS’ One-Armed Bandit, CUP’s Spring 2025 Blackbox Mainstage Show, The 131st Annual Varsity Show. Dance

Barnard Dance Department

  • Wednesday, January 22, and Thursday, January 23, 6 to 9 pm, Studio 305 (Barnard Hall)
  • The Barnard Dance Department will present four new works this semester, choreographed by Jodi Melnick, Maguette Camara, Kyle Abraham (staged by Tamisha Guy), and Antonio Carmena. Students may audition for multiple works but will only be cast in one. Students cast must register for a credit-bearing course. Registration is not required (dancers will fill out a form at the audition). 

Columbia Repertory Ballet

  • Friday, January 24, 4:30 pm (studio open at 4 pm for check in and warm up), Gibney (890 Broadway)
  • Columbia Repertory Ballet is a student ballet group that presents pre-existing repertoire both from classical story ballets and from contemporary and neoclassical choreographers. Their audition consists of a ballet class and potentially an excerpt from one of the semester’s pieces. Register for the in-person audition or to send a video reel using this form. Columbia Ballet Collaborative

  • Saturday, January 25, 12:30 to 5 pm (1 to 2:45 pm or 3:15 to 5 pm), Bridge for Dance Studio 1 (105th and Broadway)
  • CBC is a student ballet group that brings in choreographers to create new contemporary, classical, and neoclassical ballet works on students. Their auditions consist of a ballet class with a short contemporary section and an optional pointe section. Video auditions ask dancers to submit a dance reel, technique class excerpts, and/or improvisation and must be sent by Thursday, January 23. You can sign up for the in-person or video auditions for CBC’s 2025 Spring Gala using this form, which is due Thursday, January 23. CUBE’s Paquita

  • Sunday, January 26, 1 pm, Bridge for Dance
  • Columbia University Ballet Ensemble is one of Columbia’s ballet groups and presents a full-length production of a classical story ballet each semester. This year, they will present Paquita. They cast all dancers who audition, including those with no experience. To register for the audition, fill out this form by Saturday, January 25. Sabor

  • Tuesday, January 28, 10 pm to 12 am, Wang Pavilion (Callbacks Wednesday, January 29, 9:30 pm to 12 am)
  • CU Sabor is Columbia’s Latin dance group, presenting works from a variety of traditions. They will offer two workshops before the audition, on Thursday, January 23 and Monday, January 27, 9 to 11 pm, Lerner First Floor. No previous experience is necessary. Orchesis

  • Saturday, February 1, 10 am to 12 pm, Wang Pavillion
  • Orchesis is Columbia’s largest dance group and presents student-choreographed dance pieces each semester in a variety of styles, typically including contemporary, jazz, and hip-hop. All dancers who audition are cast, including those with no experience, and you do not have to attend the audition to be cast, although you will need to fill out a form, typically available the day of the auditions. CU Gen

  • Saturday, February 1, 6:30 to 10:30 pm
  • CU Gen is a Columbia dance team that has roots in K-pop but presents a wide range of choreographic styles. Follow @cugeneration on Instagram for more details.

Columbia UnTapped

  • Columbia UnTapped is seeking a stage manager for the 2025 Spring Show. Previous experience and interest in tap is great but not required. If you’re interested, you can fill out this form.

Raw Elementz

  • Raw Elementz is one of Columbia’s hip-hop groups. They will hold spring auditions but have not yet announced the date. They will hold an open class Sunday, January ??, 8 to 10 pm, Lerner 555, so interested dancers can attend the class to learn more before they audition. Theatre (non-CUPAL)

Barnard Theatre Department

  • Wednesday, January 22, 6 pm, Minor Latham Playhouse (Callbacks Thursday, January 23)
  • The Barnard Theatre Department’s Spring 2025 productions include Zuzanna Szadkowski’s Fox Toss, Sophocles’ Antigone (adapted by Lewis Galantière), Suzan-Lori Parks’ 365 Days / 365 Plays, LM Feldman’s A People, and the Senior Thesis Festival. Auditions for the Spring 2025 Theatre Department season will begin with a group meeting at 6 pm followed by individual auditions, consisting of a short monologue. Complete this form to register for the audition. Students cast must register for a credit-bearing course.

Latenite

  • Latenite is Columbia’s live sketch comedy group, presenting an anthology of student-written sketches each semester. Interested students can participate in a variety of ways. Play submissions are due on Friday, January 31; director interviews will be held from Tuesday, February 4 to Thursday, February 6 in Hamilton Hall; and actors can interview from Tuesday, February 11, to Thursday, February 13, 8 to 11 pm in Hamilton Hall. Theatre (CUPAL)

CUPAL is the Columbia University Performing Arts League. This group helps facilitate many of Columbia’s performing arts groups on campus, particularly most student theatre groups. They run auditions for all of these groups, so you can be considered for as many as you’d like. They ensure that each production gets the people they need in a process called ActorShare. Sign up for an audition slot using this live sheet and fill out the audition form and/or the interview form for roles and positions in the productions below. Auditions and interviews will be held from 1/27 to 1/29 unless otherwise noted. This season guide has more information on each production’s specific open roles, positions, and audition requirements. CUPAL Special Project

  • Each semester, CUPAL presents a special project, partnering with other groups and artists to put together an interdisciplinary, large-scale work. This year, Memento Mori and CUPAL will present Friday Night Live, a comedy extravaganza featuring Columbia comedy groups, student comics, and a special guest. Follow @cupalcolumbia for more details.

Barnard-Columbia Ancient Drama Group

  • BCAD, a group that presents ancient plays in their original language, presents Oedipus at Colonus,  the final segment of the Theban trilogy. This production is interview-only. Follow @bcancientdrama on Instagram for more details.

Black Theatre Ensemble

  • BTE is a group that presents works that feature and uplift Black voices. They will present two shows, their mainstage production of Femme Noire, Nuit Blanche, and their second annual musical medley, this year featuring music from The Wiz. Follow @cublacktheatre on Instagram for more details.

Columbia Musical Theatre Society

  • CMTS is Columbia’s student theatre group dedicated to producing musical theater revivals and showcases. This year, they will present two performances, their mainstage production, Ride the Cyclone, and a “low-commitment, low-stress” showcase (everyone who auditions will be cast for the showcase). Columbia University Ballet Ensemble

  • Columbia University Ballet Ensemble is one of Columbia’s ballet groups and presents a full-length production of a classical story ballet each semester. This year, they will present Paquita. Columbia University Players

  • CUP is a Columbia theater group that presents theater works each semester. This year their Black Box mainstage has not been fully announced, but will grapple with themes of antisemitism, homophobia, xenophobia, and sexual assault while also celebrating resilience and love. First Stages

  • First Stages is Columbia’s theater group dedicated to presenting new, original student-written musicals. This spring, they will present Alive: The Mary Shelley Musical, about the life and work of Mary Shelley, and “R” Town, about the “nepo baby mayor of a about the nepo baby mayor of a down-on-its luck rural town who gets roped into committing a series of murders to drum up excitement for the town’s annual serial killer festival.” Follow @firststagesnyc on Instagram for more details.

King’s Crown Shakespeare Troupe

  • KCST is a Columbia theater group that presents Shakespearean productions each semester, including an outdoor production each spring. This year, that will be Julius Caesar. Follow @kingscrownshakespeare on Instagram for more details.

NOMADS

  • NOMADS is Columbia’s group dedicated to cultivating and producing new student-written plays. This semester, they present One-Armed Bandit, “a surreal, farcical romance between a casino waitress and one of her slot machines.” Follow @nomadscu on Instagram for more details.

Columbia University Sketch Show

  • CUSS is Columbia’s online sketch comedy group, and seeks actors for their general cast as well as sketch writers and film directors/editors. They also seek actors, producers, and boom operators for The Night of the Show: Part 2, a comedic film. Follow @cusketchshow on Instagram for more details.

Barnard Theatre Department’s production of Twelfth Night via Bwarchives
