No because why do we call it that? Why do we lie to ourselves?

The scheduled chaos has sprung—it’s official: winter break is over. Well, at least the break part, because the winter part is still very much alive and making itself known. Despite the fact that we’ve officially started the Spring Term, spring itself is nowhere to be found. Of course, those who’ve lived through other spring terms are well aware (and perhaps, unfortunately, accustomed to this reality—though I don’t think I will ever be). But still, it’s insane to me that low temperatures and vile winds will dominate the rest of the school year.

It hurts when you FINALLY catch a glimpse of warm sun, or a hint of colorful flowers starting to bloom, only to realize you have to study for finals and leave soon. The title of this semester is not earned. It’s misleading—fake news. This is not the spring semester. It simply cannot be when half of it is still winter, and 3/4 of it feels like it. Of course, there will be days, moments of false hope, but the cold will not leave without a fight. Therefore it cannot be a true and proper spring semester.

With the start of a new term—a new year—I feel like we should have left winter behind. Alas, we must adapt. Therefore we either need to change the name or change the weather. Unfortunately, with climate change only making things worse, it seems there’s really only one option. Because I cannot keep getting lied to. I vouch for honesty and integrity—pillars any institution such as ours should hold dear.

I want to wear spring dresses, floral patterns, and vintage sweaters. Instead, I’ll be carrying my thick coat until winter passes. And even though I know this is the case, even though I’ve had time to process it, I still wish there had been a clearer warning sign beforehand. So it’s time to end the propaganda. We are not beginning the spring semester. Whatever we’re doing here, it is not that.
