Location: 605-615 W. 115th Street.
- Nearby dorms: Furnald, Woodbridge
- Stores and restaurants: UPS Store (yay!), the best Halal cart, Lerner, Morton Williams, M2M, Uni Cafe
Cost:
- $7,340 (same as Wien, McBain, Broadway)
Amenities:
- Bathrooms: Decent floor bathrooms. Upper floors renovated recently, and 2-5 will be over summer.
- AC/Heating: Air conditioning and heat.
- Kitchen/Lounge: Every floor has a new-ish lounge with a kitchen, furniture, and flatscreen. Ground floor lounge to be renovated over summer.
- Laundry: Huge industrial laundry room in the basement.
- Computers/Printers: Computer lab on the first floor with one printer.
- Gym: Treadmills and ellipticals on first floor.
- Intra-transportation: Three amazingly quick elevators.
- Hardwood/Carpet: Carpeting, but a few rooms have vinyl flooring.
- Wi-Fi: Yes.
- Practice rooms with pianos in the basement.
Room variety:
- Singles: Tons and tons of singles that are around 107 sq. ft. The 22 and 20 line of singles are about 120 sq. ft. Almost entirely singles on the 10th through 16th floors.
- Doubles: The 2nd through 9th floors have doubles available on either wing. They are pretty cramped at around 175 sq. ft. The 30/28 line of doubles run about 200 sq. ft.
- The 05/07 line has walk-through doubles on every floor, but they’re awkwardly shaped, and cumulatively about 210 sq. ft. Also, RIGHT behind the elevator shaft.
Numbers:
- Doubles: Are available even to unlucky sophomores. Same for the walkthroughs ~10/3000
- Singles: Cut-off will likely land somewhere in the last bunch of rising Juniors. ~20/2800
Bwog recommendation:
- Many residents enjoy the privacy Schapiro offers.
- If you need to preserve personal space with a single, Schapiro is a great option for rising Juniors, comparable to Broadway. But don’t come here expecting the open-door friendliness of John Jay single living. Schapiro residents tend to be much more distant.
- For rising sophomores, Schapiro is a decent alternative to McBain or Wien in the search for doubles, but you can find much bigger rooms and a more sophomore-friendly social atmosphere in McBain.
Resident opinions:
- “I lived in a big(ish) double on the second floor as a junior (shafted, I know), but given the nice location with easy access to Riverside park, being right across from campus and relatively close to food, it’s not terrible.”
- “Complaints: weird heater noises and unbearable heat at all times, it’s way too quiet of a dorm if you are a social person, NO floor refrigerators even though there is a floor kitchen and disgusting, cramped bathrooms.”
- “I love Schapiro after living in Carman and then Broadway. It’s so nice having your own room, and the building is always quiet because there isn’t much going on.”
- “Ugh. I hate it here. Nobody does anything, like, ever. The bathrooms are small and quickly get disgusting. Idk why, but there are flies in the bathroom. This place is kind of a bummer after living in Carman last year.”
- “Living in a Schapiro single can actually be quite nice, and having working AC is definitely a plus. Make sure to get a room on a top floor — they haven’t renovated the bathrooms on the lower ones and they are absolutely disgusting.”

@Schap resident I was seriously surprised by how much I like this dorm. I have a renovated single with hardwood floors (the fake kind, but still) and a great kitchen, convenient location too. Shared bathrooms always suck, and the above commenter is so right that you hear literally everything in the hallways (though not the rooms next to you which is good), but overall this is a great dorm.
@RA in Schapiro The new showers still suck: they have mold, and the water isn’t hot half the time.
@a@aol.com And what’s worse, there’s a gloryhole that goes from a shower into my room. At first I liked it, but now I feel like people are taking advantage and overusing it.
@hooda's halal food tru tru TRUUU best halal cart in morningside, hands down. reppin dat lamb over rice, hot sauce extra white sauce till the day i die
@for the last time UPDATE THE PRICES
@Anonymous Schapiro walkthroughs behind the elevators are the worst rooms on campus. Do not take them
@Schap Alum Beware though, you can hear EVERYTHING in the halls. It is really annoying to hear door slams and such. Even whispers are magnified somehow.
Basically, there is no soundproof barrier via your door.
@Anonymous uhh but schapiro is quiet so you don’t hear much anyway
@uhh sex. loud.
