This week marks Islam Awareness Week, a series of events and guest speakers sponsored by the Columbia Muslim Students Organization (MSA) that both helps Islamic people on campus celebrate their faith and educates other members of the community. This year, the week’s theme is Reclaiming Muslims Narrratives, which, according to the event’s official Facebook page, “aims to deconstruct distorted and false narratives of Muslims in an effort to bring back and take agency of our own narrative ourselves.” There will be events every night this week, all of which are open to CUID holders. (Non-CUID holders can contact the Columbia MSA to RSVP.)
The schedule for this week is as follows:
- Reclaiming Religious Narratives with Imam Talib Abdur-Rashid: today (2/8) from 8:30 to 9:30pm in Lerner Hall C555
- Muslim Women Talk Back: tomorrow (2/9) from 7 to 8:30pm in Altschul 530; features Nitasha Siddiqui, Nihal Al Qawasmi, and Huma Hasan
- Black and Muslim in America, A Forgotten Narrative: Wednesday (2/10) from 8 to 9:30pm in 304 Barnard Hall; features Professor Souleymane Bachir Diagne of French and Philosophy at CU

@Felix Pappalardi It seems every week is Islam Awareness Week, because of the atrocities that are committed in the name of Islam. Just a week or two ago, Boko Haram burned children alive in the name of Islam. Who are we to disagree with them?
Moderate Muslims of course would vehemently disagree with their interpretation, and we should be grateful for that I suppose. But anyone who has read the Qur’an and Hadith will realize that the moderates have no scriptural basis for their claims, only their own conscience. The conscience of peaceful Muslims is the key to a peaceful future. But will they rise to the occasion and ideologically defeat their radical brethren? I doubt it, but remain hopeful.
@Okay But let’s stop pretending like terrorism has nothing to do with Islam.
