Columbians snagged some Oscars last night! Adjunct film professor Geoffrey Fletcher won Best Adapted Screenplay for his work on “Precious,” and Kathryn Bigelow, SOA ’81, became the first female to ever win an Academy Award for Best Director, and her movie “The Hurt Locker” took home 6 awards in total, including Best Picture. @Anonymous is “the hurt locker” actually a good film or is all the hype and support for it just part of the american foreign-policy political agenda that has been crippling this nation for the past ten years?
@Hurt Locker Is actually surprisingly non-political IMO. As the viewer, you’re bound to draw conclusions based on what goes on in the movie combined with your own political beliefs, but there is no overt political message. It’s focus is rightly on the soldiers themselves. I think the most glaring message I took from HL was just how disconnected we as citizen are from the war and the soldiers fighting it. I don’t think that’s dependent on ideology.
@om Good point re: our disconnection from the actual experienes of American soldiers in Iraq. Which should make us wonder whether American troops would still be in Iraq if American TV News programs were doing their job properly and showed scenes even remotely like the ones in The Hurt Locker on a daily basis (the way they did during Vietnam). Unfortunatley, American TV news editors have decided to serve as the propaganda arm of the U.S. governemnt…

@thanks hi bwog, thanks for the updated comment policy. and having read bwog for a few years now its refreshing to see a lot of the unfair barbs become fewer and fewer. there was a time when kids would out and out just attack fellow students and bwog editors refused to moderate. its refreshing to know the present leadership has other thoughts in mind.
