Happening in the world: UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson was admitted to a London hospital yesterday evening, 10 days after the announcement that he tested positive for COVID-19. Officials stress that these are precautionary measures due to “persistent symptoms.” Though the foreign secretary Dominic Raab will lead a COVID-19 meeting today, Johnson officially remains at the head of the government and claims he is still in “good spirits.” As of today, the UK has over 47,000 confirmed cases and nearly 5,000 confirmed deaths. Happening in the US: Facebook has come under fire after its automatic content moderation system resulted in threats to ban people organizing groups to hand-sew masks that can then be donated to medical workers, limiting these programs’ outreach capabilities. The system, long critiqued for its inability to accurately target harmful instead of harmless content, is under new pressure due to the flood of coronavirus scams and misinformation. Happening in NYC: New York City schools have canceled all of spring break, deciding to continue remote learning through the time originally cut out for both Passover and Good Friday. The decision has been met with opposition from many, who insist a break is needed both for religious observances and the mental health of students and teachers. At the same time as this announcement, the department has declared all daycares will close, except those serving essential personnel, and that city schools will stop using Zoom due to concerns over the security and privacy of Zoom calls. (Gothamist)
