Rising juniors continued picking today, and 5-person concluded for Barnard. Highs: More people picked for 5-person! Lows: That triple in 110.
Welcome back to another day of housing selection, now with our lovely friends at Barnard joining us! For the latest information, check out this twitter thread with live updates, Columbia’s live counter, and Barnard’s big spreadsheet (apologies to Columbia students–I believe you need a GBear account to access).
Barnard Edition:
Barnard selection is now halfway done after the conclusion of the 5-person lottery! 80 groups took part, with 47 being unwilling (no one wants that triple/double situation in 110, huh) or unable to pick. Similar to the 4-person we saw an uptick in the number of groups (and especially all rising sophomore groups), most likely due to the addition of 121st. Surprisingly, all sophomore groups (unlike the 4) were able to pick this time! This is because no rising junior would want that triple/double situation in 110–these dorms went completely unclaimed until the 53rd group picked.
How do you interpret the cutoffs? It’s Group Value/Lottery Number. So for example, 200/73 means that you are a group of all rising juniors with a lottery number of 73 overall.
What’s the difference between this year and last year? This year, all rising sophomore groups were able to pick–yay! Since this year we got the curveball of 121, we saw a bit different numbers, but similar trends as to last year. In typical fashion, all single suites when to all senior groups, but we saw mixed junior+ groups were able to snag some good stuff too! CG went earlier than last year, and 616 went later. These variances are again due to the added number of suites with the addition of 121 and 110 (since 110’s lease was being renegotiated during housing last year).
What’s next? Next Monday is the last day for getting those 6-person group made, and the Monday following is the last for 1-2-3 groups. A bunch of rising junior groups are looking for 1-2 people to fill singles and doubles for the 6-person lottery. My personal recommendation? If you’re a rising sophomore still looking, find a group of juniors that are looking to fill people for their suite–that ensure you will definitely be able to pick in the 6-person and you have a chance on getting on a higher/nicer floor. If you are an all sophomore group, your best chance will be 600 or Plimpton. Last year, around half all sophomore groups went to the 1-2-3, but with added 121st dorms, there will be less chance that will happen. And if you do end up in the 1-2-3 or Guaranteed List, it’s not the end of the world! I got a Plimpton single off of Guaranteed, it will be okay in the end.
Columbia Edition:
What’s Gone: The last 6-person suite in Claremont has been taken, otherwise, nothing else has been wiped off the board today. However, the largest singles in corridor style living becoming scarcer, with the big ~160 square foot singles in Harmony vanishing before our very eyes.
What’s Left:
20 studio doubles left in Watt
8 7-person suites left in Claremont *no one has taken these lmao
7 8-person suites in Ruggles
59 corridor doubles left in 600 West 113th
155 corridor singles left in Broadway
35 corridor doubles left in Broadway *no one picked
46 corridor doubles left in Carlton Arms *no one picked
41 corridor singles left in Harmony
4 corridor doubles left in Harmony
146 corridor singles left in Schapiro
84 corridor doubles left in Schapiro *no one picked
40 corridor doubles in Wien
115 corridor singles in Wien
What’s Scarce:
9 corridor singles left in Carlton Arms
6 corridor doubles left in EC
3 6-person suites in Ruggles
Looking Ahead: Housing selection for juniors continues on Friday, with the last day of all rising juniors being next Wednesday. There are very few suites left, with the only ones available right now being 4 6-person suites, 8 7-person suites, and 7 8-person suites. This means that those 2-person through 5 person suites are going to start dispersing into those corridor singles and doubles. Carlton singles are most likely going to be gone soon, and will anyone pick into a Carlton double? Only time will tell.
