Presidential Debate Watch Party

  • Tuesday, September 10, 8 to 10 pm, Lerner Hall, Lerner Roone Cinema.
  • Gather round and watch the presidential debate with your peers and Barnard Professor and Fox News Decision Desk Analyst Michael Miller! This cross-partisan event is co-hosted by ColumbiaVotes, CU Democrats, and CU Republicans and offers the chance to hear expert analysis on the debate in real-time.

AI & Local News: Challenges and Opportunities for Journalism in NY

  • Monday, September 9, 6 to 8 pm, Pulitzer Hall, Lecture Hall (3rd Floor).
  • Journalism Professor Juan Manuel Benítez will lead a discussion on AI’s impact on local journalism in New York. Benítez will be joined by New York State Senator Kristen Gonzalez, Elinor Tatum, Zachary Richner, Marjorie Velázquez, and Mark Hansen to explore the challenges and opportunities that AI poses for local newsrooms.

  • Attention all dining plan holders! Take a break from classes to taste and judge omelets made by the various Columbia Dining culinary teams. Students who arrive early will receive “eggciting giveaways,” and all students who vote have a chance to win $100 Flex. This event is sure to be the new Battle of the Dining Halls!

  • Join Professor Olatunde Johnson to hear an information session on the Constitutional Democracy Initiative, an organization that focuses on democracy’s crises and what democracy should look like. Lunch is included.

Toward a Pedagogy of Deep Listening: a Lecture and Workshop with Felicia Rose Chavez

  • Friday, September 13, 11 am to 3:30 pm, Milstein LL002 and Milstein LL001. 
  • Hosted by the Barnard Center for Engaged Pedagogy as part of the Susan Ratner ‘86 Writing Speaking Pedagogy Series, this lecture and workshop will bring students and instructors together to consider nontraditional teaching models in writing. Felicia Rose Chavez, an award-winning educator with an MFA in Creative Nonfiction, will first give a lecture on the skill of critiquing. In the afternoon, she will lead an interactive workshop that includes storytelling, freewriting, and discussion to question traditional teaching habits and imagine new teaching models.
