Happening in the World: In Vietnam, Typhoon Yahi has had dire consequences including at least 179 deaths across the northern region of the country and hundreds of missing people. In its capital Hanoi, thousands of people are being evacuated. The typhoon has been described as Asia’s most powerful this year (BBC).
Happening in the US: On Wednesday, Hurricane Fancine came ashore in New Orleans, Louisiana with strong winds and heavy rain that flooded the streets. After some hours, the storm lost some of its strength, though going into today, Thursday, intense flooding is still affecting different areas of the region (NBC News)
Happening in NYC: Harvey Weinstein, former film producer and convicted sex offender, is due in court today in Lower Manhattan for the retrial of multiple New York sexual assault accusations that were overturned in April. Weinstein was convicted in 2018 on rape and criminal sexual assault charges, though the New York Court of Appeals overturned them based on having been unfairly tried. However, he may not be able to attend the scheduled hearings due to having undergone emergency heart surgery this Monday. Weinstein has also been convicted in Los Angeles on similar charges.
