The Earth’s moon is expecting some company. Editor’s Warning: Mentions of death.
Happening in the World: Earth’s moon will have a temporary friend: a small asteroid (estimated to be 10 meters wide) will orbit Earth for a period of around two months. Named 2024 PT5, it’s one of very few that scientists have been able to detect with current survey capability (though survey capability has improved recently to be able to detect them regularly). Unfortunately, PT5 won’t be visible with an average telescope or with the naked eye. (AP)
Happening in the US: The Gulf Coast of Florida was recently hit by Hurricane Helene on Thursday and continued into Friday morning as the Category 4 storm travelled North. Hitting record-breaking wind speeds and rainfall, it was the strongest storm documented in the Big Bend region. Millions across the Southeast region of the US experienced power outages. There have been at least 42 recorded deaths as a result of the hurricane. (NBC)
Happening in NYC: Robert F. Kennedy Jr. will not be restored to the ballot in New York after it was ruled that he had misdeclared his address. Despite spending much of his time residing in Los Angeles, he listed an address in Katonah, New York. Although he had already endorsed former president Trump, his lawyers claimed that his suspended campaign should make it onto the ballot. A state court judge ruled him ineligible for the ballot based on the finding, following up with the observation that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is in the process of removing himself from the ballot in several other states. (NYT)
