Yes… freshmen canon events. Sorry, but you can’t escape them.

Being a freshman at Columbia has had its super exciting moments–from meeting new people, to eating new food, to exploring what the city has to offer–yet I’ve had my fair share of interesting experiences…especially on campus.

While talking to my friends–who share these exact same experiences–I began to realize how, even though they’re incredibly humbling, they’re also needed for character development.

I figured it would be cool to relate these freshman canon events to some songs that I, unapologetically, still have on my Spotify playlists. No–you cannot interfere.

  1. Possibility by Lykke Li: On the night before the second week of classes started, I spent alot of time with my friends. I consider myself someone who hardly gets sick–even during flu season. However, when I woke up the next morning, I had a really weird feeling in my throat…and then I coughed–all in all, not a very fun feeling. Of course, I took cold medicine and other necessary actions, but the next couple of days were presumably worse. Yes, I felt like Bella during her window scene in New Moon.
  1. Homesick by Noah Kahan: The first week of being here, I was super homesick. As someone who was born and raised in Alabama, traveling across to New York was super intimidating. In fact, it was more of a cultural shock than anything. However, I’ve realized that there are many advantages to being in a city like here.
  1. Hoedown Throwdown by Hannah Montana: My first dorm lounge gathering… a place where I got to meet friends and express myself through Just Dance.
  1. I Forgot That You Existed by Taylor Swift: When you wake up and without a thought, prepare to walk to your floor’s bathroom. Yet, once that door clicks shut, you realize: you forgot your key. The shameful walk to Hartley Hospitality to get a temporary key–no further explanation needed.
  1. Are You Satisfied by MARINA: With midterm season already here, we are now experiencing the treacherous experience of imposter syndrome–my favorite! However, I’ve grown to realize that at the end of the day, it’s okay. The Earth will keep spinning.

After all, as I’ve said before, I’m pretty glad I’ve gone through these specific experiences. As I continue through my journey at Columbia, I can’t wait for the many more I may go through!
