Alice Diop: Cinema From the Margins
- Monday, November 18, 6 to 7:30 pm, Buell Hall, East Gallery
- Alice Diop, an acclaimed Senegalese-French director and screenwriter, will discuss her work and creative process with Mame-Fatou Niang, Associate Professor of French Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. They will discuss Diop’s exploration of the “ordinary” within her work along with questions from the audience.
Is This An Orientalist Painting? lecture
- Thursday, November 21, 12:15 pm to 2 pm, Heyman Center for the Humanities, 2nd floor
- As a part of their Thursday Lecture Series the Society of Fellows will host Iheb Guermazi go discuss the painting “Portrait of an Egyptian Woman,” by Ivan Aguéli, a Swedish painter and anarchist activist who converted to Islam. Through exploring the question of whether or not this is an orientalist painting, this lecture will explore the connection between “personal biographies and Orientalism in art historical discourses.”
Barnard/Columbia Dances at New York Live Arts

- The Barnard Dance Department presents their fall performance, featuring new works created and staged on Barnard and Columbia dancers. The works include three new works by choreographers Bo Park, Lena Engelstein and Lisa Fagan, and NiNi Dongnier, as well as a Merce Cunningham MinEvent staged by Lisa Boudreau with music by Meredith Monk arranged by Allison Easter. Three Sisters — Barnard Theatre

- The Barnard Theatre Department produces Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters (1900), translated by Paul Schmidt and directed by Gisela Cardenas. The play follows three former Muscovite sisters, Olga, Masha and Irina, and their lives and dreams in their new provincial town life. Get your tickets here.

- In its 49th festival, Latenite Theatre will host seven student written and directed sketches of experimental comedy.
- Friday, November 22, 6:30 pm to 9 pm, the Katharina Otto-Bernstein Screening Room (Lenfest)
- The School of the Arts Film Program, the Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender, and Columbia University Life will host a screening of Noah Schamus’ (School of the Arts ’21) Summer Solstice (2023). The movie is about a trans man called Leo who goes on an unexpected road trip with his college best friend. A conversation between Writer and Director, Noah Schamus, and School of the Arts queer cinema Professor Ron Gregg will follow the screening. Get your tickets here.
- Saturday, November 23, 8 pm, Roone Auditorium (Lerner Hall)
- Sabor, Columbia’s Latin dance group, presents their fall showcase, this year titled Soñando con Sabor. The show features student choreography and performance in a variety of styles, including salsa, reggaeton, merengue, and bachata, and raises funds for Sabor’s high school outreach program.
