The bird flu outbreak has caused egg prices to skyrocket over the past two years. Editor’s warning: mentions of death.

Happening in the World: Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic resigned yesterday evening after nationwide protests over a railway station canopy collapse which killed fifteen people last November. Months of protests culminated yesterday in blockade of a busy road junction in the nation’s capital of Belgrade, during which a university student was injured. Alongside his resignation, Vucevic pardoned all students and university-affiliates who were charged in connection with the protests. (BBC)

Happening in the US: Egg prices have doubled since the summer of 2023 due to an outbreak of bird flu, with the average price per dozen hitting $4.15 last month. When the virus is detected on a poultry farm, the entire flock must be slaughtered to prevent the spread of the disease, which can set back egg production by months. Cage-free egg prices have been particularly effected by the outbreak as states impose regulations on space for chickens to curb the spread of the virus. (AP)

Happening in NYC: New quotas put in place over the weekend as part of President Trump’s mass deportation initiative would require ICE branches to make a minimum of 75 arrests per day, boosting nationwide arrets to 1,800 per day. Although no comprehensive account has been made of how many arrests were made in the New York area last week, on average, ICE arrested about 24 people per day in the city last year. A former ICE program analyst commented to Gothamist that fulfilling the new quota would require “a total shift in resources.” (Gothamist)
