On Wednesday, February 2, Deputy Events Editor Ava Slocum attended “Babylonian Modes of Thought and the Scientific Imagination,” the latest installment in SIPA’s weekly “Food for Thought” lecture series.

David Freedberg’s Iconoclasm, published in 2021, is the result of five decades of foundational study on the topic. On Friday, January 28, Deputy Events Editor Ava Slocum attended the Society of Fellows and the Heyman Center for the Humanities’s discussion of Freedberg’s newest work.

On Wednesday, January 19, Deputy Events Editor Ava Slocum attended the Institute for the Study of Sexuality and Gender’s discussion of The Inheritance, the 2021 graphic novel memoir by Professor Elizabeth Povinelli.

In their first in-person production since early 2020, the Columbia University Players can finally welcome an audience back for The Dead, a stage adaptation of James Joyce’s short story. Staff Writer Ava Slocum went to the Lerner Black Box Theater for the Friday performance of the show, directed by Celia Krefter (CC ’22).

Staff Writer Ava Slocum’s Lit Hum professor recommended that her class attend Wednesday evening’s talk, “Classical Allusions in Contemporary African-American Poetry.” And it was so interesting! Dr. Chiyuma Elliott gave her presentation over Zoom, in a guest lecture coordinated by the Morningside Institute.

This past Tuesday, Staff Writer Ava Slocum finally got to go see one of the film screenings for the Columbia Maison Française’s series Mauvais Genres: French Cinema Takes On Gender. She attended the screening and Q&A for Ladies of the Wood (2021), directed by Claus Drexel, soon to have its theatrical release in France.

Last Wednesday, October 27, Staff Writer Ava Slocum attended the Zoom discussion “On Translating Dante: A Conversation with Mary Jo Bang ’98,” presented through the Columbia University School of the Arts.

This past Wednesday, Staff Writer Ava Slocum attended an online reading of Asiimwe Deborah Kawe’s play Appointment with gOD, presented as part of the 2021 Columbia University School of the Arts International Play Reading Festival through the Lenfest Center for the Arts.

This past Tuesday, Staff Writer Ava Slocum attended Columbia’s African American and African Diaspora Studies Department’s discussion of Read Until You Understand: The Profound Wisdom of Black Life and Literature by Dr. Farah Griffin.
