Columbia posted various statements via Instagram, email, and the Department of Public Safety’s website in response to reports that individuals sprayed protesters with a chemical at CU Apartheid Divest’s (CUAD) January 19 protest. Editor’s warning: mentions of violence

On Friday, Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) hosted a protest to encourage students to participate in the tuition strike and send a message to the University to lay “hands off Yemen and Gaza.”

On Wednesday, January 18, President Minouche Shafik announced that Angela V Olinto, professor and Dean of the Division of Physical Sciences and the Albert A Michelson Distinguished Service Professor at the University of Chicago, will begin her tenure as Provost in April. 

The New York Civil Liberties Union has issued a letter to Barnard President Laura Rosenbury, alleging that College policies prohibiting political expression on departmental websites and requiring websites to be approved by the Office of the Provost violate academic freedom.

On Monday afternoon, Barnard students gathered in an emergency protest to call for the resignation of Barnard President Laura Rosenbury if she does not demand a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

Last month, two teams from Columbia University qualified to take part in the upcoming annual International Quiz Bowl Tournaments (IQBT) Undergraduate Championship Tournament. Columbia’s teams finished in the top 40 out of 100 teams at the online qualifying event.

A coalition of student groups, including Barnard-Columbia Abolition Collective, Student-Worker Solidarity, and Columbia-Barnard Young Democratic Socialists of America, has announced plans to mount a tuition strike ahead of the Spring 2024 payment deadline. Among other demands, organizers hope the move will pressure the University to divest from Israel.

Jerome Davis will end his tenure as Secretary of the University at the end of 2023, but will remain a part of the University’s administration in an advisory role until June 2024.

On Thursday, November 30th, members of the coalition Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) engaged in two demonstrations in reaction to a University-held event and the annual Tree Lighting ceremony.

Gillian Lester will end her tenure as Dean of Columbia Law School at the end of the 2023-2024 academic year, but will return to full time teaching  as a member of the Faculty of Law.
