Senior Wisdom: Frances Bodomo

Written by

Name, school: Frances Bodomo, CC

Claim to fame: Thinking I could crew on most on-campus film sets to supplement my double-major courseload. Also, chasing after you to submit to the CUFP Film Festival, also WBAR. Organizing events without a cell phone (hey, it all worked out!)

Where are you going? I’m staying put for the first time in my life. Film school in the fall!

Three things you learned at Columbia:

  1. Americans will say, “Hi, how are you?” … and then keep walking.
  2. You can get into any class you want to take: study abroad, early graduation, or a life-threatening illness always makes this your last chance to take a class. You cannot, however, get out of Frontiers of Science by deferring it until the illusory “5 year probationary period” is over.
  3. “No, you still have your dignity and that’s the problem!”

Justify your existence in 30 words or fewer: I was also in Chad Kia’s Lit Hum class. Also, I recently started my swim test from the diving board, despite myself. So sorry, other girl in my lane!

Any war stories from the War on Fun? I really wish I could speak of 28-hour ragers, but: walking into a friend’s room only to get written up for drinking Yuengling and listening to Ben Kweller. Yes. Ew. On so many levels.

Would you rather give up oral sex or cheese? Why is everyone saying cheese? … Seriously?? (Hello, father, who is Googling my name)

Any advice for the Class of 2014?

  1. Don’t fight so hard to not be the angry [insert group here] person in class. There is no dignity or integrity in silence. Also, what is dignity? What is integrity? [<– Change all your declarative sentences to questions and they will award you a bachelor’s degree!]
  2. Come to orientation with your claws out! Whatever you want, you had best stomp over people to get it [/sarcasm]! Or you could do what I did and take the backseat / spend your first semester in your room watching Arrested Development and eating mozzarella sticks. Wow. Still do that.

Any regrets? Spending too much time trying to justify studying art when anything you can study here is indulgent no matter how close you think you are to “reality”. Also, over-interning.

    "the illusive '5-year probationary period'"?

    elusive, maybe?

  2. N

Best Lit Hum class hands down (despite the teacher)

i found this SW very confusing to read. but she seems nice.

    • ???

      are you stoned?

I thought it was great. She was witty but not in an obnoxious disenfranchised ironic way. And you can tell she is smart and confident just from the few sentences she put down.

I have no clue who you are, but keep doing your thang.

      • Ah, yes...

The famed wit of the disenfranchised. With no recourse to "vote the rascals out," these obnoxious folk turned to humor to express what they could not at the ballot box.

  11. Only

met Fran once, but she was extremely gracious and friendly, and I really appreciate her for it! Seems like a great person.

Why aren't there any GS students featured?

    • about GS

I am usually the first person to poke fun of GS, Barnard, etc. but I think a SW from a GS war vet would actually be really insightful and offer a real change of pace from the usual SW. I know a few from class. One had unbelievable experiences that I have read about actually. We have people in this school who experienced worlds before college and it probably affected how they experienced college-- goddamit-- Let's hear what they have to say.

    • hater

      old people scare me

    • Whining

      THEY DON'T GO HERE!!1!!!!111!

Oh. Sorry, my bad. Instinct at this point. Carry on.

[Insert joke here about all GS students being seniors.]

    • ...

      god that would be depressing.

      "Where are you going?"

"Well, so Auntie Mae's been sending me love letters, looks like they want $1500/mo starting in a few months. Given the way the economy is going, that's looking fairly unlikely, so I'm currently researching US extradition treaties and foreign immigration law."

  13. nice

fran is awesome, one of the first people I met at columbia!

  14. Best

Senior Wisdom so far ! Also: mozerella sticks = good compromise between oral sex and cheese ;) Also: ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT YESSSSSSSS.

  15. yeahhhh

    fuck yeah fran

  16. mmm

    best senior wisdom ever!

  17. Eternally grateful!!!

Fran is sooo nice. I really don't know what I would have done had we not run into each other in the 14th street subway a couple of summers ago! Your floor for a week was the most comfortable $800 I will ever save!

a day has not gone by when i haven't turned to a certain friend and said, "oh man, fran's so great." i love fran!

  19. 2013

This is genuinely funny. I love this. I don't know you, but this is BY FAR my FAVORITE SW yet. And I'll have you know I watched TV reruns on youtube during NSOP week and then for the first month of school instead of going out.

  20. int.

need it to be said yet again, fran is an absolutely amazing person.

  21. ...

    She dresses really weird.

  22. lovelovelovelovelove

"Don’t fight so hard to not be the angry [insert group here] person in class. There is no dignity or integrity in silence."

say word... i dig this senior wisdom.

  24. a senior

i think this one is particularly awesome because it was like having a conversation with her. wise words, franikins.

incidentally, this woman is an ebay/craigslist whizkid. class of 2014 (and 2013, and 2012, 2011, and 2010 (it's not too late)) you should take lessons.

  25. YES

the cheese question? THANK YOU FRANCIS. this is what everyone is thinking but no one wants to say. Dude cheese is good but... I don't know, that decision is not as easy as everyone makes it out to be.

also, you're a rad person. thank you for doing this.

  26. A fellow McKennian

I LOVE Fran. We were in the same film seminar this semester and she is just the nicest person ever. Pity we didn't get to know each other better. You can't sit next to this girl and be in a bad mood. "Medically Pleasant" is the only for it.

  27. Jackovasaurus

Anyone ever notice that the endless comments start rolling during finals?

  28. Anonymous

    yay fran!! <3 WBAR

  29. fellow international

"Americans will say, “Hi, how are you?” … and then keep walking."

This threw me off too. Then I realized that the walking-on is just more pronounced here -- a ton of other places/languages do something similar, in terms of greetings, it's just that people don't usually say "hi, howareyou" and _rush_ on.

  30. Shira

Amazing, amazing. you are one of the most happiness-inducing people I've met on this campus, Fran. Thanks for being you. We'll miss you greatly at the TIC.

  31. Fran ist groß

I assume one of these answers refers to a certain Dubaian someone?

    OH MY DIGNITY

    I love youuuuu!

  32. Hi Ross!

I am proud to say I was one of the men in speedos on that bit of the war on fun.
