58 CommentsA tipster reports that a Columbia student was arrested at Westside around midnight tonight. According to a cashier, the suspect had shoplifted before, but was finally caught tonight, and led away in tears.
Update (1:50): Ricky, the manager at Westside, confirms that a female student was arrested. He noticed her put about $60 worth of groceries into a bag and walk out of the store. When he stopped her, she claimed she had bought them that afternoon. He brought her back inside and called NYPD, and she was taken into custody. Apparently people, including students, attempt to shoplift fairly frequently (perhaps they haven’t noticed the 30 video screens above the cash registers—look up next time you check out!) but that there had not been a Columbia-related incident recently.

@At this rate I’m going to waste over 50 swipes. Dining could have easy helped this kid out, or set up some system where I can donate my wasted swipes. I know about the workstudy system where you work in the dining hall for food, but it’s already filled. In fact, the whole work study system is broken, there are not enough jobs for everyone.
@Anonymous Thats just not true. Where I work there are plenty of shifts open to be taken. If you make the effort to find a job, there is one available to you. She, however, decided to take the easy way out and not work. I understand the pressures of having to live on a tight budget. No one is denying that Columbia is expensive, but there is also no denying that she has had ample opportunities to cope, and instead she chose to shoplift.

If you’re looking for a card-swiping job, then you’re SOL – those get snapped up before the semester really gets into swing, but if you’re willing to do a bit more work, you can be a secretary in almost any department for $10-$12/hr. Take some initiative and email a department already.

@Agreed As an international student who doesn’t even qualify for work-study, I still managed to find a job for the last 2 school years. It takes some work to find work.

I don’t know anything about the situation, but I would be really sad if she was shoplifting groceries because she couldn’t afford to pay for them. Yes, it’s illegal, but it’s just unfortunate no matter how you look at it.

@CC11 There are numerous cheap grocery stores for anyone willing to search for them. I can’t afford to shop at westside, but I can live for weeks on $60 worth of Met or CTown food. $60 worth of food at Westside is $20 worth of food at those stores. Either she gets a thrill from shoplifting, or she isn’t smart enough to look for cheap food five blocks away.

@TrueNYer Grow up. The reality is that most supermarkets are quite sketch. Westside does a better job of hiding it but its more expensive.

@Met Market Is on 124th and Amsterdam and its pretty damn cheap! I wouldn’t buy meat/produce but dry stuff is decently priced and their spices are 4 for $5.

@she gotta know Friday, when everyone is partyin’ (including them frisky Westside men), is the only day it is acceptable to steal large quantities of food items. Big bowls of cereal in the mornings take a financial toll. How else is she gonna get her fix?
