Location: 411 W. 116th Street.
- Nearby dorms: East Campus
- Stores and restaurants: It’s a bit desolate over on 116th and Amsterdam. HamDel, food cart, Camille’s (if you’re brave)
Cost:
- $6,718. (Same as McBain, Schapiro and Broadway)
Amenities:
- Noteworthy: You get a sink in your room. A sink! In your room!
- Bathrooms: Amazing! Normal floor bathrooms, recently renovated.
- AC/Heating: No A/C. Pleeeenty of heat. Heaters also make a lot of noise.
- Kitchen/Lounge: Lounges on 5, 7, and 9 with a flat-screen, chairs and couches. The only big kitchen is downstairs, so cooking isn’t really an option.
- Laundry: Big laundry room near the kitchen. Nothing fancy.
- Computers/Printers: Computers and printers next to the laundry on the lobby mezzanine.
- Gym: Nope.
- Intra-transportation: Two elevators and a central stairwell.
- Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi and ethernet.
- Hardwood/Carpet: Hardwood or linoleum. The blue tile is kind of gross.
Room variety:
- Singles: Tons of John Jay-esque singles. Maybe a little bigger. Around 118 sq. ft.
- Doubles: A variety of single room and walk-through doubles. Pretty random sizes. Some are big! Averaging around 150 sq. ft. for each room.
Numbers:
- Last year’s final single went to 20/2812.
- Last year’s final walk-through went to 10/2464.
Bwog recommendation:
- Wien has a bad rap, but it seems to have turned around after renovations. Read a classy defense of this much-maligned dorm!
- The singles are a good option for rising juniors who don’t want to go to Schapiro.
- The doubles are hit or miss. If you can score a good one, nab it. As a rising sophomore, you probably won’t have a better choice..

- “I dont know why people talk shit about the sink it is the best! I was skeptical. But its the most convenient thing, at this point I am pretty sure I am dependent. And no critters.”
- “The bathrooms are super nice! Seriously! Come check them out! Some fake marble business going on and little shower vestibules. Also a view of Harlem/central park from the toilet. I can watch planes land at JFK from the comfort of the last stall.”
- “The toilets by the window on the higher floors have amazing views over the East Side and right into Prezbo’s backyard. it’s a little like being the Shitting Queen of Sheba!”
- “The sink in the room thing cannot be stressed enough. it’s not gross and it’s amazingly useful-the mirror over the sink is actually a vanity, and the mirror slides open so you can access all your makeup/toiletries while still being able to use the mirror. technology.”
- “The kitchen thing is really the only drawback. But my roommate and I were bequeathed a hotplate from an ex-wiener, and we invested in a toaster oven, and we can pretty much do everything.”
- “Thin walls and more importantly thin doors-noise from your neighbor isn’t as much of a problem as noise from the hall.”

@Current Wiener As a sophomore living in a Wien double, it’s not bad at all. You will feel isolated from all your friends living in McBain, but other than that, the room and bathrooms are pretty nice.
But beware! Not having control of your heaters is actually quite annoying since their “on” setting is so damn high. My roommate and I had windows open literally more than 95% of winter, and even then the room was sometimes still uncomfortably warm.
@Anonymous Second all that has been said…Wien is pretty sweet, especially if you live with friends.
But cooking is definitely possible (though not legal)–my junior year I had a microwave, refrigerator, toaster oven, hot plate, and hot water heater, and cook absolutely anything I wanted.

@current junior dont listen to any of the dirt people say about wien. most ppl who talk smack about wien actually never lived there. yes it sucks that the whole building shares one kitchen, but you get endless joy and utility out of the personal sink. and if i ever needed to cook, i would use it to wash/chop/prepare my food in my room, and then carry it all in a pot to throw on the kitchen stove. you adapt easily. also, there are definitely food bits and crumbs all over my messy room, but i’ve never seen a single cockroach or rat.
also maybe it was just that this year, all of the class of 2013 got screwed by the lack of regroup options, so it seems that most juniors ended up in wien. which was nice living with most of your class in a dormey building.
the rooms are also spacious (as are the closets!) and you’re close to all your classes.

@anonymouse Have to say, when I found out that I was probably going to end up in Wien last year, even as a rising junior, I actually had a self-pity cry. But I chose in with a really awesome group of friends and we got rooms all next to each other, and as a result it’s been really nice–a little bit like a suite, though of course not really. xDD For people who do general selection all on their lonesome, it seems like a bit difficult, since there aren’t really lounges on most floors and people tend not to hang out together. However, a *lot* of juniors are probably going to end up here, so as a rising junior it’s not bad, lack of kitchens and general distance from Broadway aside! It was really much better than I had anticipated. For those choosing in, I strongly recommend east-facing rooms on higher floors, since they seem to have better sunlight and views. (I ended up facing the law school, and I got more sunlight than I thought I would but it gets kind of dim at times.)
@ummmmm has anyone else noticed that the housing reviews are literally the same ones from last year? The only difference is the cutoff history. Everything else is the same- pictures, quotes,etc … i mean what’s the point of reposting these reviews if the links for the 2011 ones are already on the side bar. Come on bwog, couldn’t you have even bothered to snag some newer pictures or something?
