Mark Becker, of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, was reportedly killed in a serious multi-vehicle accident on Wednesday. Becker was an earth scientist with the LDEO and well-known environmental activist. An article from ABC describes the accident. According to another article, which further details the incident, Becker had been on his way to work at Bard College, where his “studies centered on using information technology to discern how human activities affect the environment.”

We extend our condolences to everyone affected by the passing of Mark Becker, and we ask for everyone to please remain respectful in the comments of this post.

Please correct the spelling of Professor Becker's name in the title.

It is MarK not MarC. The correct spelling of his name is on the LDEO link you (BWOG) embedded in the post as well as in the quoted text from ABC. So I don't know how you'll misspelled his name and you (BWOG) should fix it ASAP. It looks pretty insensitive.

What a sweet, kind, wonderful man. Mark genuinely cared so much about his work and about his students. His GIS class was one of the best courses I've taken in my time at Columbia- we've genuinely lost one of the greats.

So very, very saddened to hear of Mark's sudden death. A very, kind caring man who was so devoted to environmental preservation, and has saved so many wonderful acres in Bergen County with his partner Lori through their Bergen Swan . My deep condolences to Lori, may he rest in peace.

I wish the best to his family.
