Last night, an infuriating amount of students began requesting to be taken off of the Columbia Democrats email listserv. One tipster suggested that the unsubscribe-request rate correlated with Obama’s approval rating. However, the trouble came when the messages asking to unsubscribe began to forward to everyone on the listserv, not just the CU Dems Board or whoever manages such requests.

Between yesterday night and this afternoon, members of the listserv received about 30 emails asking to “unsubscribe plz.” After painful hours of having to constantly archive the thread from inboxes, CU Dems Membership Director Partha Sharma sent out the following email:

Dear Members of the CU Dems Community,

Since late last evening, our Listserv has experienced technical issues that resulted in the forwarding of “unsubscribe requests” to the entire community.
We apologize for this inconvenience, and will be working with CUIT to remedy this.

In the meantime, we request that you forward requests to be unsubscribed to my personal email address -ps2788@columbia.edu
