Housing is upon us. Bwog’s got you covered; we’ll be rolling out two housing reviews per day until no residence hall is left un-reviewed. We now introduce, for the first time in our reviewing history…110! — A Barnard dorm proudly situated far from campus.

Location: 601 West 110th St.

  • Nearby dorms: Cathedral Gardens (sort of)
  • Stores and restaurants: Westside, D’Ag, Rite Aid, Duane Reade, Mel’s, Chipotle, Starbucks, Five Guys

Cost:

  • $8,960 for multiple-occupancy rooms
  • $10,400 for a single
  • $15,450 for a studio single

Amenities:

  • Bathrooms: There are 1-2 bathrooms in each suite, and you get your own private loo if you’re in a studio double or studio single. Not so spacious, but the bathtub/shower is a nice touch, and the floors are a pretty grey marble tile.
  • AC/Heating: No air-conditioning. August, September, and May will sweat you out, so bring a good fan. No window fans or portable AC units, though — Barnard room inspections will catch you and steal your sweet air.
  • Kitchen/Lounge: Most suites have kitchens with a sink, oven, and refrigerator. Most studios have kitchenettes with stove tops, but no oven. Some studios have not one, but two, mini fridges, while the suites get one full-sized. No lounges to be had here.
  • Laundry: Laundry in the basement, cheaper by 25 cents than in any other Barnard dorm. You’ll always find an open machine. Be aware that the laundry room is not open 24 hours.
  • Computers/Printers: None.
  • Gym: No gym. Take the stairs.
  • Intra-transportation: Two elevators. Incredibly slow, and relatively small.
  • Hardwood/Carpet: Most rooms possess a fine combination of both hardwood and a navy/grey carpet.

Room variety:

  • Changes year to year, as the building primarily houses non-students. Single, double, and triple rooms in 2-9 person suites, and some studio singles. The doubles within suites are generally huge and can easily double as a common room; the studio doubles offer very little private space.
  • 110 currently hosts 183 upperclass students though the building holds 500 residents overall, including students and staff of neighborhood academic institutions and (what some might call too many) families with (noisy) children.

Bwog recommendation:

You can easily fit in your daily mile of walking! The building is old but has “personality” and is generally underrated. You will at some point find bugs or roaches, but fear not! The building’s facilities team will help you, very quickly. If you are close with your roommate, choose a studio double; if you’re an affluent and antisocial Barnard woman, choose a studio single; if you have a close gang of friends, choose literally any suite. Lots of photos and detailed descriptions of these rooms are on the Barnard Residential Life portal!
You will soon find 110 close to your heart.

Resident opinions:

  • “The front desk staff are so friendly and helpful! You never have to show your ID again after September, basically, and if you’re a non-BC female can avoid having to be signed in. Or even if you’re a guy and walk in with enough purpose.”
  • “Prepare a plan of action against all bugs. Rite Aid will keep you covered with supplies.”
  • “Westside will soon become part of your daily life, and the religious man shouting about Jesus just outside every night should integrate nicely with your homework schedule. On the plus side, there’s a very talented saxophonist who plays outside Rite Aid once or twice a week.”
  • “Plentiful food and delivery options. You basically share a building with Chipotle, and there’s a fresh fruit stand right outside on Broadway.”
