Bwoglines: Maybe It’s A Meteorite Edition

Happening in the World: According to National Weather Service radar, a meteorite is thought to have landed near Viñales, Cuba. Residents reported sounds of a large explosion, but a meteorite has yet to be confirmed as the cause of the sound. The NWS tracked the descent of the meteorite using their radar located in the Florida Keys. Luckily, no injuries have been reported relating to the meteorite impact, which can cause damage to property and people via sonic waves from the impact.

Happening in the US:  After being detained by ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement), Muneer Subaihani was deported to Iraq against court orders. Two years ago, federal courts ordered a stop to the deportation of 1,400 Iraqis. However, in a rare move, courts forced ICE to track down Subaihani so he could return to the United States, where he had resided in for over 25 years. But, in order to return him to the United States, ACLU hired a private investigator to track him down, since ICE had lost track of Subaihani. After months of searching, the ACLU was able to find him. Bringing him back to the United States proved trickier than first imagined, since ICE had not provided Subaihani with any Iraqi identification, making it very difficult to get him back on a plane to the United States. After a long wait, Subaihani finally landed in the US on Tuesday. Before being deported, he had a green card and worked at an auto repair shop. He hopes to get his apartment back and find another job.

Happening in NYC:  Due to a recent drop in temperature, more than a thousand inmates have been left in cells with fluctuating heat and electricity. Several inmates have been reported to having health problems related to the severe cold. The Bureau of Prisons confirmed that the lack of heat and electricity was due to a partial power outage, but that emergency generators were working to keep heat and electricity on. As of Friday, there has been some heat restored at the jail, yet is not yet at full capacity.

Happening on Campus: Next weekend is the Scholar and Feminist Conference: The Politics and Ethics of the Archive hosted by the Barnard Center for Research on Women (BCRW). This year’s conference focuses on politics and ethics of archival work in the reconstruction and interpretation of the past. The event will have traditional keynotes and panels in addition to workshops and exhibits. Registration for the event is preferred.

Documentary of the Week: This week’s pick is 7 Days Out: CHANEL Haute Couture Fashion Show. 7 Days out is a great series in general, this is my second favorite one. It showcases the 2017 CHANEL Fashion Show and it is stunning. The amount of detail and design that goes into all of the dresses is incredible and the amount of artistry that is used to create the set is amazing. You can watch this purely for the aesthetic of it all.
