We’re kicking off our housing coverage with a look at one of Barnard’s oldest residence halls, Hewitt! Situated in the quad alongside Brooks, Sulzberger, and Reid, this hall hosts mostly sophomores and juniors with some seniors. If you’re looking for a guaranteed single close to campus, this is a great choice for you.

Location: Barnard Quad (3009 Broadway)

Nearby Dorms: Brooks, Reid, Sulz, Sulz Tower, the 600s

Stores and Restaurants: Morton Williams, Shake Shack, Ivy League Stationers, sweetgreen, Starbucks, pretty much everything on Broadway (this is a very convenient location)

Cost: $5,413 per semester

Amenities:

  • Bathrooms: Yes, there are communal bathrooms. Everyone’s favorite. There is one gender-inclusive bathroom per floor, but you’re welcome to use any of the bathrooms on the floor, so you have quite a few to choose from. The showers in Hewitt are notorious for having extremely weak or extremely strong water pressure and fluctuating temperatures. I’d recommend trying all the bathrooms on the floor to find your preferred shower. Hewitt bathrooms are unique in that they are significantly larger and have stainless steel countertops. It kind of feels like a spaceship. How exciting.
  • AC/Heating: There is no air conditioning, but there is heating. Classic Barnard. I’ve found that rooms get pretty hot in the winter, so it’s best to keep your window open all year round.
  • Kitchen/Lounge: Each floor shares a lounge with the entire quad, and it is located next to the Sulz elevators. The lounges were recently refurnished, so the furniture is no longer tearing at the seams. There is an oven, sink, microwave, and stovetop along with cabinets to store your kitchen tools in. I wouldn’t leave your stuff in there, though, as there is no guarantee that you’ll get it back. Also, the lounges usually smell pretty bad.
  • Gym: The Barnard gym is located in the basement of Barnard Hall, so you’re pretty close.
  • Hardwood/Carpet: The rooms have linoleum (this isn’t Wellesley) and the hallways have a strange multi-colored carpet.
  • Wifi: Barnard Secure!

Room Variety

  • The 8th floor houses first-years in triples and doubles, but I believe the rest of the rooms on each hall are singles
  • Hewitt singles are more spacious and convenient than you think! Don’t let the Hewitt reputation get you down

Numbers

  • Mostly sophomores and juniors with some seniors mixed in. You have a good chance of getting a Hewitt single if you’re a sophomore or above, so don’t worry!

Bwog Recommendations

  • If you want a guaranteed single in a convenient location, then this is the perfect dorm for you. As a first-year going through housing selection, I heard so many rumors about how awful and undesirable Hewitt was. After living in 110 for one semester and then switching into Hewitt, I realized how amazing it was to have my own space!
  • If having a single is important to you, then definitely go for Hewitt. If you’re worried about being away from your friends, then you can all pick into rooms on the same floor that are next to one another!
  • The only downsides are the communal bathrooms, the noise level, and the meal plan. Being on the quad meal plan is definitely a major consideration.

Resident Opinions

  • “You don’t realize how great it is to have a single until you have one.”
  • “I could never go back to living in a double again.”
  • “I hate having to pay for the quad meal plan, but other than that, I love Hewitt!”
  • “The views are amazing!”
