Bwog Staff shares our wisdom from years of experience making bad choices on Butler Lawn.

Happy hoco, everyone! What a great weekend this is. We get to participate in all the best collegiate activities: watching alumni viscerally reminisce, getting heckled by a giant anthropomorphic lion in a jersey, cheering on what is certainly a football team, and watching some poor Pantone-292-clad fool throw up mango White Claw outside Baker Field. Don’t be this fool! Day drinking can be tough, but there is a better way.

Here are our tips for the best possible day drinking experience:

The pre-pregame:

Start drinking extra water the night before you day drink. If you wake up dehydrated, then you’ll be screwed before you even start consuming alcohol.

Also, eat breakfast. Bread and other carbs are good for soaking up booze.

What you drink:

Try to avoid going ham on really sugary/artificially flavored drinks. They are fun in the moment but they will come back to bite you in the ass. (One Bwogger had a few too many Bud Light Cherry Lime-A-Ritas at her first homecoming, and now she can’t even look at them.)

Drink a cup of water between each alcoholic drink. You’ll be pissing so much, but you won’t be ill!

Stick to one type of liquor (vodka, rum, etc). This is always a good drinking practice as mixing liquors will almost always make you throw up.

Persisting:

If you have a long day (and night) of drinking ahead of you, stick to mixed drinks over shots. The shots will catch up with you in a brutal way.

Bring a snack. Hot people bring a granola bar to the function.

Keep track of your drinks (tally marks on your arm is the classic way to do this).

Taking a nap after day drinking can be risky—it’ll either renew you completely or you will feel worse. One staffer’s tried and true method for when she gets home: take EMERGEN-C, then nap, then slowly wake up, then shower, then put on fresh clothes.

It’s a team sport:

Have a designated buddy in your group that you can check in with to make sure you’re both feeling okay. If you need to bounce, let this person know.

Man v. nature:

Be careful of the elements: if you’re in the sun for a long period of time you can get dehydrated easily, even if it’s not super hot out. On the flip side, it looks like it will rain a bit this Saturday, so make sure you’re prepared for that possibility.

Now go get loose!

Bwog does not condone underage drinking. Please drink responsibly, and take care of yourself and others.
