Because nowadays, there’s always vaccine news to report on.

Happening in the World: The success rates of the HPV vaccine are so high, cervical cancer screenings may no longer be needed. A study based out of the UK showed that the vaccine is not only saving lives, but is well on its way to eradicating the disease entirely. The World Health Organization has not commented on this study, however, it did set disease eradication as its goal back in the early 2000s (BBC).

Happening in the US: Gun control advocacy group Giffords files lawsuit against the National Rifle Association. Giffords, a gun-control nonprofit organization run by former Arizona politician Gabby Giffords, alleges that the NRA has repeatedly broken campaign finance laws to throw illegal support towards Republicans, and has done so since 2014. The suit comes after Gifford’s failed attempt to sue the Federal Elections Committee directly for allowing NRA interference and is one of multiple actions filed against the NRA in the last year (NPR).

Happening in NYC: Starting today, NYC Public Schools will begin hosting vaccine drives to vaccinate school-aged against COVID-19. NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio hopes to run at least one drive every day for the next week. The move to vaccinate young children was announced Tuesday when the CDC authorized the use of the Pfizer vaccine for children over the age of five (Gothamist).
