Happening in the World: Turkey is examining what earthquake victims and building experts are calling “inferior construction” of buildings. After assessing 170,000 buildings in the affected quake zone, Murat Kurum, the environment minister, reported that 24,000 buildings were heavily damaged or collapsed in the quake. The Turkish Justice Ministry has established earthquake crimes investigation bureaus in affected areas and is planning on charging contractors and those connected to poorly constructed buildings. Turkey’s vow to charge and pursue contractors responsible for collapsed buildings follows the rise of national anger as more bodies are found in the rubble and rescue workers deal with the full extent of the earthquake’s destruction. Happening in the US: It’s Super Bowl Sunday! Nothing brings together lovers of football, good food, and high-budget commercials like the Super Bowl. Kickoff for Super Bowl LVII begins this Sunday at 6:30 pm Eastern, as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles face each other in America’s most-watched television broadcast of the year. Rhianna will be performing the half-time show. (NYT)

Happening in NYC: The MTA is moving forward with Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposed Interborough Express line. Last month, they conducted and released a feasibility study for light-rail trains traveling between Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and Jackson Heights, Queens. The proposed expansion includes Metro-North trains running from the Bronx through Queens to Penn Station–without stopping in Queens. Bronx residents feel snubbed by this transit plan, especially considering they have long expressed a desire for a route connecting the Bronx and Queens. (Gothamist)
