Intrigued by the possibility of brunch for the cost of a mere meal swipe, Staff Writer Sabine Ebanks and a friend adventured to Ferris to try the Eggs Benedict.

One Sunday morning my suitemate and I woke up and, as usual, checked the Columbia dining website to see if we could be bothered to leave our rooms. We were delighted to discover that Ferris was serving Eggs Benedict, and, as dedicated fans of Ferris breakfast/brunch foods, we knew we had to try it.

Egg: 10/10

This poached egg was actually perfect. Some skilled individual managed to get the yolk to be golden and runny without the rest of the egg being raw while cooking in a dining hall kitchen, which is quite impressive.

Hollandaise: 7/10

To be honest, we couldn’t really taste it, but it looked vaguely the right color.

English muffin: 3/10

The English muffin was, somewhat disappointingly, a raw bagel. It gave the whole thing a strangely doughy quality. Why was it raw? Why does Ferris always serve raw bagels? These are the questions we were left pondering.

Ham: 4/10

It was a sausage patty, not ham. It did not pair great with the raw bagel, unfortunately, as it was a little too strong in flavor.

Overall, we’re not sure that we’d RUN to Ferris before their 2 pm closing time on Sundays just to experience the Eggs Benedict, but we do love that they did something adventurous. It’s always fun to try something new from the dining hall. As my friend put it, “maybe if I were starving it would be delectable, but Ferris oatmeal is on top.”

Anecdotally, I did observe one person more recently carrying an eggs benedict in the Carman elevator and it seemed to have real ham. Do with that information what you will.
