This week Cooking With Bwog brings you something a bit different: a concise guide to making great cuisine out of food stolen from John Jay Dining Hall. For those of you without a meal plan, Bwog suggests you make friends with a freshman willing to steal the food for you, and then cook to your heart’s desire. And, as always, if you have a creation or question for the Bwog Culinary Team, let us know – bwgossip@columbia.edu
Butterfinger Bowl
1 scoop of granola
1 scoop peanuts
1 scoop peanut butter
Directions: Mix together and enjoy.
Bagel Pizza
1 bagel
1/4 cup marinara sauce from pasta bar
cheese from salad bar
Directions: Put bagel (sliced) with sauce and cheese in oven at 350 degrees until cheese is melted and bagel is warm – about 10 minutes.
Stir Fry
Rice (what ever kind they’re serving)
Veggies from salad bar: mushrooms, red and green peppers, onions (from hamburger bar), broccoli, and whatever else you might fancy
1/4 cup oil and a bit of soy sauce from the condiment tray above the soup
Tofu or cold chicken
Peanut butter (optional)
Directions: Heat the oil in a pan of some kind on high heat. Add the veggies (watch out for spattering) and cook until they’re soft. Add the tofu or cold chicken so it warms up, then turn off the heat and toss in peanut butter or soy sauce to taste. Microwave the rice with a bit of water in the bottom of the bowl so it doesn’t get hard. Serve stir fry over rice.
Yogurt Parfait
Yogurt
Granola
Fresh fruit if there is any
Directions: Take a tall cup (or steal one from John Jay) and fill it with alternating layers of yogurt, fruit and granola. It will usually keep for a day or so without the granola getting too soggy, so steal it at night for breakfast in the morning.
Smoothies
various fresh and canned fruit (they usually have peaches, banana, apple, strawberries)
yogurt or soft serve ice cream
milk or soy milk
optional: peanut butter, chocolate sauce
Directions: Mix together in a blender. If you don’t have a blender, mix in a bowl using a fork. Drink/eat it with a spoon.
Quick and Lazy Pancakes
Waffle batter from brunch
a bit of water
maple syrup
Directions: Add a bit of water to waffle mix, and it magically becomes pancake mix! Fry on a pan with a bit of oil or butter and serve. This is great because you can store extra batter in a closed container in your fridge and have smores flavored or whole wheat pancakes before John Jay opens in the morning.
