Spec is reporting that an employee at Appletree supermarket tipped off police to a man he believes to be the suspect in the recent Journalism School student rape. We don’t know at this point if it was in fact the suspect himself [UPDATE: He’s not], but police responded to the tip and searched the area this morning.
UPDATE: Barnard students received the following e-mail at 5:45 PM:
“This is a further updated advisory concerning the sexual assault of the Columbia graduate student in her West 141st Street apartment.
We have just been notified by the Manhattan Special Victims Squad (MSVS) that their analysis of the Apple Tree surveillance tape confirms that the person spotted in the store early this morning who resembled the police sketch of the suspect IS NOT in fact the person being sought in connection with this crime. We will continue to keep you apprised of important developments as they occur.

Add quelling your worries about wandering rapists to the possible benefits of Barnard over Columbia.

@hey reverse pins are a hoax:
http://www.snopes.com/business/bank/pinalert.asp
@reply to lots a lot of you asked why to give him her pin? duh you idiots…if he uses the card, he gets caught on tape. when my moms purse was stolen we called the credit card companies. they don’t immediately cancel the cards, they put a fraud alert on them and monitor their use. a lot of places where you can use plastic to pay, or atms, have cameras. so they match up the times and HEY PRESTO have visual ID. yea, so the guy who stole my moms purse tried to buy 25 beef tenderloins at 1AM…which in and of itself seems so conspicuous. also, it is in the bank/cc company’s best interest to serve the customer, and any money spent in such circumstances is generally reimbursed
@spec wrote a second article when the results came from that email. They didn’t jump the gun, more like the cops did their job and spec followed.
@Mother Superior I would say they did jump the gun, seeing as they called him “the suspect” in their e-mail rather than “the man identified as the suspect” or just “the man.” Calling him the “suspect” is as much a leap to judgment as calling a suspect “the perpetrator” – which is why newspapers call suspects suspects before they are convicted.
@um, no. If I suspect you stole my watch, you’re the suspect, even if you’re innocent. You’re the suspect because I suspect you, right or wrong. Dig?
@um, yes. The analogy would be like this:
If I suspect you stole my watch, you’re the suspect, even if you’re innocent. If someone else then sees someone who they think is you, that person may or may not be the suspect.
In this case, the man the Spectator referred to was not the same man who was suspected of rape; he was suspected to be the suspect, but “suspected suspect” does not equate to suspect.
Asshole.
@um, yea! My take on the matter:
I agree.
Especially with the unnecessary insult.
Cunt.
@um, hell yeah! As for my commentary
I like your style.
Motherfucker.
@Anonymous surveillance video analysis had shown that it was in fact the suspect, i’m sure columbia students would have gotten an email immediately.
@On the other hand It was just a stupid false alarm.
@simple speculation here, but barnard doesn’t receive emails sent out to columbia unless they are forwarded by the barnard administration. maybe columbia admins. have the responsibility to send it out? i agree though, columbia should get it, especially since columbia students can also live in plimpton.
@VIGIL where are the pictures!!
@soo in the event a pin was entered in reverse.. would it still withdraw the money?
@nah http://www.snopes.com/business/bank/pinalert.asp
@thanks snopes clears stupid shit like ‘reverse pin’ up pretty quickly.
@Seriously I’d like to hope that incidents like this, where barnard’s better attention to its student body is so apparent, help end the unwarrented barnard bashing from my fellow columbian women.
@a point it seems before the fuckwad left he took her atm card and cash and made her tell him her pin number. just as an fyi, i realize that people may not even think of this in that kind of situation, but if you can think to give the guy the reverse pin, many atm’s will notify police when he tries to get cash. thats probably not true for the typical bodega atm i guess and god knows how many unnerving thoughts that woman must have been having but it cant hurt to put it out there
@drunk guy it’s hard enough trying to remember the alphabet backwards….
@huh? why would she ever tell him the correct pin to begin with? why not lie?
@Probably He might have threatened to come back and hurt her more.
@mlp I’m pretty sure she had other things on her mind, you know, like surviving. In a situation like that most people don’t give a damn what happens to their debit card, especially if giving him the pin might make him leave quicker.
@wtf i don’t think they jumped the gun. we wouldnt have heard anything about it if they hadn’t talked about it right away.
also, why the fuck didn’t columbia get this e-mail? how come columbia women don’t get this support?
@question columbia students in general get no support.
columbo telling the RAs to “comfort” us last night…such bs. passing the buck.
@link anyone have a link to the picture from the bodega’s security camera? I can’t find it.
@X.J. http://www.nydailynews.com/news/crime_file/2007/04/17/2007-04-17_torturer_on_tape.html
@spec really jumped the gun with this one.
@yeah calling him “the suspect” unqualified
@heh spec = speculative
@BC student an e-mail Barnard students got about an hour ago:

@Wha?!?! “The person being sought?” So they know who “the person being sought” is? This is news to me…
@There's a picture The police have released surveillance footage from a bodega where the attacker used the victim’s ATM card. So they know who that person is in the sense that they have his picture, but they don’t have a name yet.
@BC Student again sorry, accidentally pasted that twice.
@appletree I just walked by there (6:30pm on Weds) and three cops were talking to the owner. None of them looked too concerned, though.
@c'mon Are you fucking serious?
“The New York Daily News reported that DNA evidence that the suspect left behind, and that police hope will lead to the suspect’s capture, has been found in the hospital where the victim was being treated for her injuries.”
Just think about what that actually says… Yeah. Now try and write something without sounding like a douche.
@yes spectator needs to change that
@yeah when I read that I thought they meant that the suspect had gone to the hospital…
Anyone have a link to the police sketch of the guy?
@agreed it’s insensitive to a degree, but mostly confusing
@don't over react NYPD responds to all leads regardless and the suspect has been “spotted” at multiple locations at the same time.
