Today at 3 pm, officers from Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid gathered on College Walk to send Class of 2018 Regular Decision letters. This year, a total of 32,967 students applied—the third largest pool in Columbia’s history, though 1.5 percent fewer than last year’s. About 10 percent of them (3,298 students) applied early. Columbia admitted 2,291 applicants to CC and SEAS this year for an admit rate of 6.94 percent, slightly higher than last year’s rate of 6.89 percent. And two years back, the Class of 2016 admitted 7.4 percent, a considerable increase from the previous year’s low 6.9 percent.
Here are some photos of the festivities—check below for a statement from Jessica Marinaccio and a video of the Admissions singing “Roar, Lion, Roar.” Welcome, Class of 2018! We can’t wait to have you on campus.
The obligatory group panorama, now with 50% more PrezBo’s Audi.
Per tradition, they also sang the Fight Song. Cute!
For the Class of 2018, this application process has been a roller coaster of emotions and “challenges” with the Common App that eventually led to a deadline extension. The journey ends at 5 PM EST today, when applicants will be able to use this Admissions website to check their decisions. To the Class of 2018: welcome to Columbia!
Update: Jessica Marinaccio, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions and Financial Aid, released the statement below commenting on the admitted students:
Today we have the privilege of releasing acceptances to an exceptional group of students who have been chosen from one of the largest applicant pools in Columbia’s history. They represent all 50 states, Washington, DC, and the US territories, as well as nearly 80 countries from around the world. Even more notable than this geographic diversity is the remarkable range of talents, ambitions, passions and perspectives that these individuals have shared with us in their applications, and that we hope they will share with our entire community in the fall. Over the next few weeks, students, alumni, faculty and administrators will join us in congratulating these students on their admission and welcoming them to the Columbia community. We are confident that the students who choose to join the Class of 2018 will continue the tradition of excellence and engagement that have been defining hallmarks of Columbians since 1754.

@the space bar you know you don’t have to use an underscore right
@the space bar @CU_Alum, but also eating my own caustic millennium vitriol #karma
@Punctuation Advocate But, it gets so little play other wise…
@crown and veritas The Columbia SEAS typically admits 9 to 10% second only to MIT which also records about 10% for direct engineering admission rate. The total enrolment at Columbia SEAS is between 300 to 400, suggesting that between 3,000 to 4000 applied to SEAS. If total columbia admits is 7% of 32, 500 or 2200 then Columbia College only admits is 2200 -400 ÷ 32,500 . 1800/ 28,500 which is about 6.08 %.
CC admit rate is estimated to be about 6. 1% Columbia SEAS is what bumps it to 6.9%.
@Anonymous excellent back of envelope calculation, 10/10
@be brave be brave BWOG, and just write 7%.
@CU_Alum Engineering schools do have higher admit rates, but the numbers couldn’t be skewed that heavily. SEAS is only about 1/3 the size of the College, and it gets a lot fewer applicants. If the College’s rate was between 3% and 4% and the overall rate was just under 7%, SEAS’s rate would have to be awfully high.
@CC/SEAS Acceptance %% Breakdown please im dyyyinngggg to know!!
@Anonymous CC would have a much lower rate, right?
@Anonymous CC alone is probably 3-4%. Engineeering schools by nature just get lower numbers of applicants as it is a single focus school.
@Anonymous ew stop caring
@Anonymous What percentage of legacy students who applied were admitted?
@Anonymous As far as I can tell, they don’t release that information. I guess that tells you a lot about what those numbers look like.
@Anonymous Actually, if you check the fall Columbia College Today, it tells you who had parents who went to CC. Not an exhaustive list, but it gets most people.
@CU_Alum That list shows only the ones who enrolled. It does not include legacies who were admitted but declined the offer. I believe it lists only those with a parent who went to CC. Those who have a parent from SEAS aren’t listed unless the other parent is a CC grad. And to calculate the percentage who got in, we would need to know how many legacies applied overall.
@CC '14 Princeton’s acceptance rate this year was: 7.28%. It’s good to see they have remained Columbia’s wait-list for another year.
@Anonymous Columbia has had a lower acceptance rate than Princeton for the last four or five years, and was even lower than Yale’s and Stanford’s for a couple of years as well.
@Shipping shouldn't be expensive If current trends tell us anything, they could batch 90 percent of the letters to about 15 prep schools.
@Curious Can you please name them?

@Anonymous 6.94%? Embarrassed. Where have our standards gone?
@Anonymous If things keep going at this rate we’ll end up like that sordid back water Penn.
@jaded idk…this place is pretty overrated
@CC'10 It is and was. And yet, I continue to donate $20 a year.
@Anonymous Well, overrated or not, your Ivy degree will probably make your resume looked at a little more closely than another.
Plus, even if you and others are so jaded, there’s a reason why you all didn’t transfer…
@Anonymous Congratulations to those that made it!
@Aww Congrats new lions!!! Enjoy the moment
