No. 2? Lee C. Bollinger
President of Columbia University since 2002
Mr. Bollinger, 59, a former dean of the University of Michigan Law School, was a finalist for the Harvard job when Mr. Summers got it. While he was considered by some at the time to be the leading candidate, it was speculated that his lack of Harvard credentials may have weighed against him. Another big question is whether Harvard would poach a president from a fellow Ivy League institution. Mr. Bollinger has had a tough year, negotiating a dispute that arose over allegations that professors in Columbia’s Middle Eastern-studies department had intimidated pro-Israel, Jewish students.
How come it’s never a lack of Columbia credentials that makes the difference? Oh. Right. Not Harvard.

@Max It’s worth noting that Bollinger has good Columbia credentials, being a graduate of the law school. George Rupp did not but Michael Sovern did. Columbia respects its own.

@ttan I would submit that none of the six candidates are likely. Here’s why: University Presidents usually have a tenure of around 10 years. All of those guys are, for all intents and purposes, too old. Summers was 46 when he took the reins at Harvard.
Now, Prezbo has completely denied interest in the Harvard Presidency and his focus at CU during Friday’s USenate meeting. Ruth Simmons at Brown is in the beginning stages of a capital campaign that it would be dishonest and a bit of a betrayal to abandon. Faust is a no because U Presidents these days are almost always outsiders. Dynes has been at UC for too little a time to move on. Wrighton might be a possible choice, but then again, he’s old. Prezbo was 54 when H passed him over, so who knows.
