Columbia’s PanHellenic Association—AXO, DG, SDT, and Theta—have decided which sororities will be joining Columbia over the next two years, according to Spec. And the winners are: Alpha Omicron Pi and Gamma Phi Beta! Specifically, AOPi AOII will be starting a chapter next semester and Gamma Phi Beta (whose cutesy abbreviation/nickname was not known at press time) will start colonizing Columbia “no later sooner than 2015.”
It is a homecoming of sorts for AOPi AOII, which was actually founded at Barnard. Gamma Phi Beta has no prior affiliation with Columbia also had a chapter at Barnard, but is at least and is from the same state—having been founded at Syracuse—and can claim to be the first women’s organization to be ever called a “sorority.” Like poor AXO, the two new sororities will be houseless.
Update, 9/25 3:40 pm: Bwog has since learned from a confidential source that Gamma Phi Beta’s cutesy nickname is GPhi.

@Anonymous More slootes!
@Make up your mind, CU The fact that we’re adding two new sororities is, I guess, good, because there were so many sad freshmen trying to join the four we already had last year. Personally, it doesn’t make any sense to me why anyone would join a sorority on this campus, unless they’re not really sure what they’re interested in or want a permanent group to get white-girl drunk and party with. But, I guess I’m glad they’re here, because they make some people happy. And, sure, happiness is what we need more of. But…why AOII and GPhi? If you’re into the idea of a sorority, I say go hard or go home. Everyone that’s familiar with real Greek life schools know that these two are lame. If you want a sorority that’s not affiliated with crazy drunkenness, just create your own club or some bullshit. Zeta and KKG also presented here, and they’re ridiculous and gross and stereotypical at most schools, but it least it seems like they know how to have fun. This is lame and calling yourself a ‘sister’ is embarrassing. Being in a sorority at an Ivy League school is, also, embarrassing.
@Anonymous You know an awful lot about sororities and their reputations for being so disdainful of them.
@herpderp aren’t you the crazy girl who pretended to be a columbia student
@Rhea Sen tell your sorority to stop recruiting meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee for you two. fucking jerrkkkkkkkkk asshollleeeeee
@Anonymous That’s not what I said. Let’s work on our reading comprehension here. I said it’s not in good Panhellenic spirit. I’m arguing that there is no reason to put people down.
@sister Let’s stop trying to pretend that sororities are philanthropic organizations. I’m in one here at Columbia, and anyone that tells you that we are all about standards and community service is lying to you. There is a stronger sense of community, yes, but we are a LOT less philanthropically oriented than many other (free) groups on campus.
To the AXO above who is offended by the “Like poor AXO, the two new sororities will be houseless” – get over it. You would be better off as a sisterhood and in recruitment with a house. It’s a fact. You want a house really badly too, or you wouldn’t be applying for one.
And finally, to defend the original post, the sororities are named as AXO, DG, SDT, and Theta because that is how they are referred to colloquially within the Panhellenic community. They aren’t cutesy and diminutive nicknames – those are the names people use to talk about them.
@Anonymous Erm, speak for yourself. Not like it’s so terrible for sororities to not be super philanthropically-minded, but mine is, so don’t pretend like your experience is universal.
@herpderp who wants to bet “sister” is in dg
@at least the bitch is honest
@Anonymous I’m really sorry you feel this way. I am so proud to be in a sorority on this campus and it has truly changed my life for the better. I am ecstatic that we are welcoming these two organizations to campus and I am full of Panhellenic spirit! I don’t think it’s fair to judge any sorority based on the reputation you think they have because each sister’s experience is different. Who are you to comment on someone else’s sisterhood, someone else’s bond? Again, I feel sorry for you! You get out of life what you put into it, that’s the bottom line.
@Panhell Unite To whoever wrote this: please, for the love of a higher power, have some respect for Greek Life. The things that sororities and fraternities do on campus, such as spend countless hours and raise thousands of dollars for philanthropic causes as well as give many students at Columbia a sense of community, are worthy of praise. Your sardonic tone is offensive and quite honestly unacceptable. As a student publication, you should aim to represent all students, including those in Greek Life. This community already puts down many of its members. BWOG shouldn’t be adding to the disrespect already circulating the campus.
@Anonymous amen sista! :)
@EXACTLY... Bwog should use its sarcasm and venom against people who REALLY deserve it, like Barnard and G.S. students.
TROLLOLOLOLOL
@Anonymous it’s not BWOG, it’s Bwog…
@Anonymous Who are you to say what is “quite honestly unacceptable” and what the purpose of a student publication is? To represent all students…jesus
Wonder how many sorority listservs this went out on to come support the cause…
@Anonymous I noticed that Bwog’s layout had changed, but didn’t realize the quality of the posts had decreased with it. Bwog needs to get its act together and: 1) Post news as it happens, 2) Try a bit of fact-checking, 3) Stop being unnecessarily rude to student groups. What ever happened to students being supportive of each other?
@Hey, um... NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOUR NEW SOR-HOUSES, SO DROP THE PEDANTRY.
@Anonymous I find it really offensive that you write “Like poor AXO, the two new sororities will be houseless.” Either you’re not in Greek life and you have no place talking about this because you clearly did not do any research on the subject or you are in Greek life and you are showing really poor Panhellenic spirit. I’ve been reading Bwog faithfully for three years but you’re really starting to lose me at this point.
@So you think it’s a good thing AXO has no house? Not sure what you’re trying to argue.
@Anonymous We don’t have a brownstone but we do have a townhouse in EC. She’s not trying to say it’s a good thing but she’s saying that we don’t let it adversely affect us. We would love to have a brownstone but being without certainly doesn’t make us “poor” in any way.
@ban frats on campus! and sororities too. they are part of the problem.
@Anonymous @ban frats on campus!: Fraternities my friend, fraternities!
@ugh This isn’t “according to Spec—” there was an official Panhell press release this afternoon.
Also, if you are going to list the sororities in their not full names (“AXO, DG, SDT, and Theta”)(which you shouldn’t do, since you list the two new sororities by their full names) then “Theta” would be “KAΘ.”
At least proof-read your article before it goes up. Full of easily-could-have-been-fact-checked mistakes that only make you look bad (like how Gamma Phi Beta had their Iota chapter at Columbia and how they are coming no sooner than 2015).
@Yeah but nobody says KAΘ. It’s just vocalized as “Theta,” unlike DG, SDT, or AXO which are all vocalized using their corresponding Latin alphabet letters (except for “Chi”).
Do you even go here?
@Anonymous Why even bother posting this so late? Spec beat you by hours with this news. Its not like you took the time to do some original reporting. At this point all you are contributing is pointing out that they will not have a house (without explaining why I might add, can they apply for the brownstones or no?) Oh and I guess you contributed putting AXO down…so pat yourself on the back for unnecessary sorority bashing?
@Anonymous Because no one reads spec.
@Anonymous No SOONER than 2015 for Gamma Phi Beta.
@GS '13 Hate to be nitpicky, but AOII should be written like that. Ask their future members….
@Anonymous Actually, Gamma Phi used to have a chapter at Barnard.
@nickname Gamma Phi or GPhi!
@Uh What is Gamma Delta Phi?
@Peter Sorry. Guess I have Delta Gamma on my mind. It’s fixed now.
@woah why do you have dg on your mind…creepy much?
@Anonymous Pete slams Delta Gams!
@Anonymous seriously though who doesn’t
