Sandy Floods Downtown, Breaks Windows On Campus

Thanks to Hurricane Sandy, there’s currently massive flooding in lower Manhattan and parts of Brooklyn, with streets turned into rivers in the financial district, the East Village, Ground Zero, and Red Hook. Power plants are exploding and almost all of Manhattan south of 39th street has lost power. One building on 14th street was even torn apart.

Here in Morningside Heights, we’ve been pretty lucky. Some lights have flickered and rain has leaked through ceilings and windows in EC, but no one’s lost power and the streets have not (yet) flooded. The worst damage so far has been these shattered windows in Wien Lounge.

          1. a friend says:

@a friend it appears columbia has throttled facebook and potentially some other sites on their network. people are accessing it on data network for phones, but not on wifi on cu network. I could understand shutting down hulu or other streaming sites, but a lot of people use fb to stay in touch with people at times like this. they should be pushed to explain themselves for this one. not okay. at least announce what they are doing if you are going to do something like that.

@Anonymous Spec said they’re not going to press tomorrow. Where’s the Dark Hand? Surely I thought I’d see him/her running victory laps…

    1. The Light Hand says:

@The Light Hand The Dark Hand won this round, but the war rages on! Spec4Life.

    2. First Lutenant Kernel of the Lejun The Dark Hand says:

@First Lutenant Kernel of the Lejun The Dark Hand we actually broke this news on our official twitter BEFORE spec themselves did (@spec_sucks).

I guess we at the lejun know better how to run a publication than spec. But that’s not surprising, a kindergartener probably does too.

  • Robert Ying says:

@Robert Ying Actually, the Facebook, Wikipedia, and CNN servers for this area are in lower Manhattan… so I would assume that the actual cause would be the lack of power over there.

Or maybe it’s a Republican plot… since Fox is still up.

    1. Anonymous says:

@Anonymous So you can still get on them on your phone bc AT&T has a different access point?
Gawker is also down, I think hulk just used sandy as cover to take them out though…
