If you’ve turned on the news in the past three weeks, you’ve probably heard of Manti Te’o, the Samoan Mormon Notre Dame linebacker (like that’s not news enough) whose tragic losses in his personal life propelled him to lead the Fighting Irish to the National Championship game. You’ve also probably heard that Lennay Kekua, Te’o’s girlfriend who was […]
The McBain residence hall is known for a number of astonishing qualities: beautiful views of Manhattan a disgusting ventilation shaft, a grandiose history (Meghan McCain – for real!?), and a sophisticated cultured exciting bat shit crazy party scene. If by bat shit crazy you mean tinged with the faint scent of desperation. There’s no doubt […]
Tomorrow is Super Bowl Sunday, and you may be wondering where to watch Beyonce preform at halftime. To help you with this epic search, Bwog has put together a list of your local favorites as well as some more adventurous options, all of which are offering food and drink specials for the big day. Sure, there’s a lot of weird shit on the Internet, but there’s also a lot of really fantastic reading accessible to you. This week, two excellent works involving Columbia have been put on Longreads’ Top 5 Longreads of the Week. First, Columbia Magazine put out a fascinating story about Lucien Carr, the man who essentially brought […]
On Wednesday, Eric Klinenberg, author of Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising Appeal of Living Alone, came to speak about his new book and the trend of single living sweeping America. Future Cat Lady, Claire Friedman, was in attendance. Going to a lecture about a book entitled Going Solo: The Extraordinary Rise and Surprising […]
Low: According to an email sent out by the Harvard administration yesterday, a little over half the students involved in last year’s massive cheating scandal were forced to withdraw. Many others were allowed to stay on campus under disciplinary probation. However, some students did manage to get away scot-free. I guess Harvard is simply preparing […]
In this second installment of lecture hall reviews, Bwog crawls into the depths of the aptly named Mathematics (the building, not the subject …well also the subject too). With glimmers of hope and high school idealization of college, 207 Math has promise. But can it hold up to that? The approach to Math (from interior […]
Need a slightly unusual way to get your blood flowing this evening? From 6 to 7 pm tonight in Lerner E477 (wherever that is), Columbia Bellydance will host its first class of the semester and teach you the “belly dance basics.” We’re not really sure what the basics of belly dancing are, but they sound […]
The committee to determine who gets SIC space on campus — the new “Special Interest Community House” (AKA the Convent), two EC townhouses, and a space in Wallach — had their final meeting today. They will be presenting their suggestions to Dean Martinez, who will make the final decisions next week. Later this month, applications […]
After more than 30 years of being trapped in a closet, tortoise Manuela was found alive and well after her owner died and his children cleaned out his house. Red-footed tortoises can go two or three years without food, and can “survive by eating termites from the wooden floor,” which will become a very real solution if […]
If you haven’t already figured it out from all the new car ads (okay you got us, the last one is actually a Doritos ad), the Superbowl is this Sunday! Whether you’re a die-hard fan (i.e. planning to support one of the two teams playing), or you’ll be watching the Puppy Bowl instead, we know […]
On Monday night, those with a taste for the finer things in life gathered for a poetry reading by Nick Laird and Timothy Donnelly. Both men have done the seemingly impossible: they have made careers out of poetry (*gasp!). Bwog’s master of rhythm and rhyme, Claire Friedman, reports. I arrived slightly late and had to […]
