Applications are due Friday, September 16 at 11:59 pm!

Bwog does a lot of things. We do news coverage about happenings on campus, from writing in-depth pieces to events on campus and, of course, breaking news. We write articles that range from silly to a bit unhinged, whether that’s estimating how many bodies are in the Hudson, writing about the porn stars on Butler, or defending mandatory laxatives. And, of course, we get to annoy people who feel inexplicable rage every time they see the word “Barnumbia.” Because staffers aren’t assigned to specific sections, when you write for Bwog, you can write whatever type of posts your heart desires. We just ask that you write seven or so posts of any kind per semester and go to meetings to pitch your lovely ideas!

If you don’t want to write, you could become a Daily Editor! Our Dailies are what keep Bwog running. If you’re a Daily, you get to run the site one day per week. On that day, you get to go on a power trip if you so desire as Bwog is placed into your hands to manage for the day. Being a Daily means committing one day per week to Bwog, and we love to see the faces of our dailies at our meetings!

Don’t want to do either of those things? If you’re into tech or web development, apply to our Tech Team here. If you like illustration, photography, or video, apply to our Visual Team here!

About the application

To apply for either position, please answer the questions below and send your completed application to editors@bwog.com by 11:59 pm EST on Friday, September 16.

Please send the application as a PDF entitled “[First Name] Fall 2022 App.” There are no length or format requirements for the application—we are most interested in learning about you, so be as long-winded, short-winded or creative as you’d like. If you wish to apply for both Staff Writer and Daily Editor, complete one application answering both positions’ designated questions and indicate which role you’d prefer.

Our new Fall 2022 Staffers will be announced in advance of our next meeting on Sunday, September 18!

Fall 2022 Staff Writer/Daily Editor Application

About you:

  • Classic get-to-know-you: pronouns, major (or intended major), college, and class year.
  • Why do you want to join Bwog?
  • You’re taking Bwog out on a date! What would you do? Where would you go? There are no limits!

About Bwog:

  • What do you think Bwog is?
  • Tell us about one Bwog post you liked, one post you didn’t like, and why for both.
  • Come up with three sample post ideas that you would like to see on Bwog.
  • Represent Bwog creatively (draw Bwog, write Bwog a poem, write a Bwog song parody, etc.).

Questions for Staff Writers:

  • What aspects of Columbia might you be interested in writing about?
  • In which building on or near campus would you most like to spend twelve hours?
  • Tell us about your move-in in 50 words or less.

Questions for Daily Editors:

  • Send us a screenshot of the open tabs on your browser.
  • How do you manage your time and keep yourself organized? Are you able to dedicate one day per week to Bwog?
  • What three days work best for you to Daily?

Questions on commitment/other student news organizations:

  • It is Bwog policy that you cannot simultaneously be a member of Bwog and another student news organization on campus (such as Columbia Daily Spectator, The Blue & White, or The Federalist). You are allowed, however, to write for campus literary magazines and other, non-journalistic organizations. Do you understand that if you are accepted to Bwog and to another publication, you will be expected to only commit to one organization?
  • For Dailies: Because the commitment required for Dailying is greater than that of being a Staff Writer, if you are accepted as a Daily Editor, it is our expectation that you will Daily for the entirety of the upcoming semester. If you are also applying to other places of student journalism, and are not sure which is your preference, please indicate that here. Do you understand this expectation of commitment?

If you have questions regarding the application, feel free to email editors@bwog.com at any time. Our Editors look forward to reading your applications! Stay hot af and rush Bwog—you know you want to!
