Last weekend from February 24 to 27, the Lenfest Center for the Arts presented the comedy Der Ring Gott Farblonjet, an MFA directing thesis from current student Phoebe Brooks. Deputy Events Editor and Ring Cycle enthusiast Ava Slocum attended the Saturday matinee of this vastly abridged parody of Richard Wagner’s four-opera saga.

In 2021, Anna Frajlich’s Polish-language poetry collection Imię Ojca/Im’ia Bat’ka (The Name of the Father) received its first translation into Ukrainian. On Wednesday, February 16, Deputy Events Editor Ava Slocum attended the Harriman Institute’s book talk and poetry reading for the new edition, translated last year by Vasyl Makhno.

Last Thursday, seven Columbia departments, committees, and institutes came together to facilitate a reading, conversation, and Q&A with renowned speculative fiction author N.K. Jemisin and Jayna Brown, a Pratt professor whose work pertains to Black expressive cultures and Black utopias.

Staff Writer Kate Mekechuk attended the Department of Anthropology’s Boas Talk by Dr. Myles Lennon who discussed “Affective Energy: The ‘Equicratic’ Politics of Solar Technology From Wall Street to West Harlem.”

On Wednesday, February 2, Deputy Events Editor Ava Slocum attended “Babylonian Modes of Thought and the Scientific Imagination,” the latest installment in SIPA’s weekly “Food for Thought” lecture series.

Staff Writer Sofia Matson attended the Heyman Center for the Humanities’s discussion of Roosevelt Montás work. In his newly published Rescuing Socrates, Roosevelt Montás writes on the transformative power of the so-called “Great Books” and defends their place in modern day higher education. 

David Freedberg’s Iconoclasm, published in 2021, is the result of five decades of foundational study on the topic. On Friday, January 28, Deputy Events Editor Ava Slocum attended the Society of Fellows and the Heyman Center for the Humanities’s discussion of Freedberg’s newest work.

On Wednesday, Staff Writer Charles Bonkowsky attended Angelo Caglioti’s lecture, Science and Fascism, or Fascist Science? Meteorology, Empire, and anti-Semitism in Fascist Italy through Columbia’s Center for Science and Society.
